Oct 9: What's Next for the Middle East
One year after the Hamas’ brutal attacks on October 7, Israel has opened a new front in the heart of Lebanon. The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah and the subsequent Iranian reprisals have shaken the foundations of Middle East politics from Gaza to Tehran. We convened an expert panel on October 9, 2024 to discuss the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, and explore the new power dynamics in the region.
Our panelists address the changed political landscape in Lebanon in the wake of the Israeli assault on Hezbollah, the future of the Palestinian leadership, whether the Israeli political landscape is conducive to a renewed peace process, the role of Europe in cooling tensions with Iran, and the state of American influence in the region.
Panelists:
- Julien Barnes-Dacey, European Council on Foreign Relations
- David Makovsky, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy
- Ghaith Al-Omari, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy
- Maha Yahya, The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Middle East Center, Beirut
Moderated by Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Arnold A. Saltzman Professor of Practice in International and Public Affairs and Director of SIPA’s Kent Global Leadership Program on Conflict Resolution
